Summary: Hidden Secret of Lake George NY with amazing fare featuring local products

.

What every traveling foodie wants is to find the hidden gastronomic gem of a region – the place where locals go when they want a truly special evening and extraordinary food. In the Lake George region, this place is on top of the world – literally!

Top of the World Golf Course and Resort, home to The Farmhouse Restaurant, is poised atop a mountain overlooking Lake George. Top of the World offers panoramic and breathtaking views of the Queen of American Lakes and the surrounding Adirondack mountains. It has long been a favorite of artists and photographers around the world - in fact, we were given an oil painting from this very spot for our wedding anniversary 18 years ago today.

This is not the type of place you’ll hear about from the hotel concierge desk or the clerk at your motel. No, this is a secret – the kind of place that you find only because you really care about great food and researched it before your arrival to the North Country. It’s true what they say - the food is only as good as the ingredients. At the Farmhouse Restaurant, they have their own gardens and farm right on the mountain, where the food and vegetables are fresh picked daily. Focusing on the freshest organic and locally sourced meats, cheeses and produce - the result is a spectacular dining experience. The menu at The Farmhouse proudly pays homage to the many local farms, sharing the source while at the same time showing their dedication to the local movement toward local and organic foods. (Kimberly Feeney and her husband chef Kevin London were ambassadors to Italy last year for the Slow Food movement).

For starters, I tried the Beet Soup which is served room temperature with crème freche. It was superb. This was followed by a truly artistic masterpiece – the cheese platter ($15) featuring Three Sisters of Nettle Meadow Farms (Goat, Cow and Sheep cheese) which paired well with the sweet Cranberry Walnut bread from Rockhill Bakehouse. Also on the platter was brassiola (air cured beef), spiced nuts, cured olives and asparagus.

I couldn’t resist trying the famed Flying Pigs Farm Pork raised locally and humanely in Washington County. It is served two ways, both a grilled leg and braised pulled shoulder. This dish was fabulous. The pork is truly world class and has gained a following in high-end NYC restaurants.

Although we were stuffed, we couldn’t resist the lemon pie which was the perfect end to a perfect evening, and the best possible way to celebrate 18 years of a (nearly) perfect marriage.

The Farmhouse Restaurant also caters to weddings and corporate meetings, with a fabulous golf course, private rooms and superb views. Even though it’s our secret, I highly recommend The Farmhouse Restaurant without reservation (however, reservations are highly recommended)!
